The Workshop

Slow work.
Enduring form.

Marrow & Co. is a boutique joinery and carpentry studio founded by Tom Calder in 2007, tucked into a laneway workshop in Fitzroy. We take on roughly a dozen commissions each year — residential and hospitality — chosen for their ambition and craft potential.

Every piece is designed, milled, and finished in-house. We work principally in Victorian Ash, American White Oak, and salvaged Blackbutt. We don't sub-contract the parts that matter.

What we make

Every commission
begins with a conversation.

01

Staircases

Architectural staircases — open-tread, closed-string, floating — designed to anchor a space. Balustrades, handrails and newel caps finished to match.

  • Custom geometry & rise/run
  • Integrated balustrade systems
  • Heritage & contemporary styles
02

Cabinetry & Joinery

Kitchen joinery, wardrobes, built-in libraries, and media walls — precise to the millimetre, designed to read as furniture, not fitout.

  • Solid timber & veneer panels
  • Integrated hardware detailing
  • Colour-matched paint finish available
03

Doors & Windows

Bespoke timber doors and window joinery — external and internal — that outperform mass-produced equivalents in longevity and beauty. Heritage reproductions a specialty.

  • Heritage reproduction & custom design
  • Double-glazing integration
  • VIC Building Code compliant
04

Architectural Timber Work

Ceiling panels, wall linings, feature screens, custom furniture and hospitality fitout. We work alongside architects and interior designers from concept to installation.

  • Hospitality & retail fitout
  • Architect & designer collaboration
  • Site installation by our own team
How it works

From brief
to installation.

We take on a limited number of commissions each year so that every project receives the attention it deserves. Our process is methodical and transparent — no surprises on site or in the invoice.

01

Discovery & brief

We talk through your project, space, and intent. A site visit follows. No charge for the initial consultation.

02

Design & detailing

Workshop drawings produced in-house. Materials sourced and confirmed. A fixed-price quote issued before any work begins.

03

Fabrication

All work is made in our Fitzroy workshop. Typical lead time is 10–16 weeks depending on complexity. Progress photos shared fortnightly.

04

Installation & handover

Installed by our own crew. Site cleaned. A care and maintenance guide supplied with every commission.

What our clients say.

"Tom and the team made a staircase that the whole house is built around now. It wasn't cheap, but seeing it in the space — you understand immediately why."

Sarah & James L. Hawthorn Residence — Staircase commission
★★★★★

"We've worked with a lot of trades. Marrow & Co. are on a different level — the drawings, the communication, the finished product. Will come back for the kitchen."

Philippa O. Clifton Hill — Heritage doors & windows
★★★★★

"As an architect I'm particular about who I recommend. Tom has never let a client down. The detailing on the Merri Creek ceiling panels was exceptional."
